The Italian lobster boat, at its largest
Mochi Craft is the Ferretti Group brand that took the New England lobster boat and rebuilt it in Italy. The line began in 2003 as an idea of Norberto Ferretti and designer Brunello Acampora, and the Dolphin 74 became its flagship: the same long sheer, low deckhouse and workboat honesty as the originals, wrapped around the interior volume and the systems of a full Ferretti Group yacht. Two decades on, she is still one of the very few 74-footers that looks like nothing else on the dock.
Three levels, two helms
M/Y Contango is arranged over three levels. The flybridge carries its own helm, a wet bar with a grill, a dining table for the whole party and sunpads, all shaded by a bimini. The main deck holds the salon, a dining area, the galley and a second, enclosed helm station, so she can be run from inside in weather and from the bridge in the sun. The lower deck is given over to the owner and guests, with the crew forward and their own way in and out. Twin MTU 12V 2000 engines give a cruising speed of 13.5 knots and a top speed of 15 knots.
Timber, teak and mosaic below
The interior is the part of a yacht that dates the least, and here it has aged particularly well. Warm timber joinery, teak soles, glazed cabin doors and mosaic-tiled bathrooms give M/Y Contango the feel of a classic Italian motoryacht rather than a production flybridge. Six guests are accommodated in three staterooms with en-suite bathrooms, including a full-beam master amidships with its own vanity and settee, and three crew live in two cabins. A ship's office off the accommodation corridor makes a long stay aboard a workable one.
Garage, toys and the bathing platform
Aft, the transom garage is fitted with launching rails and carries a jet ski and a Seabob together, with diving and snorkelling gear stowed alongside. It opens onto a bathing platform that becomes the beach club at anchor. Forward, a sunpad ahead of the wheelhouse gives a third place to spend the afternoon, and the shaded aft cockpit seats the whole party for lunch on teak.
